Toyota Announces 2027 WRC Entry Structure: Two Teams, Two Cars for a New Era
── Tänak & Rovanperä Return, with Evans, Solberg, Pajari, Katsuta and a Star-Studded Line-up
Toyota GAZOO Racing officially announced its 2027 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) entry structure on 3 November 2026.
For the 2027 season, which will introduce the new Rally1 technical regulations, the team will compete with two different car models across two teams.
In 2026, TGR-WRT secured a record-equalling sixth consecutive manufacturers’ title, while Elfyn Evans claimed his first drivers’ championship. All five crews scored multiple victories during the season. Building on this momentum, the team remains committed to its philosophy of providing every driver with a competitive car under the new regulations and is preparing to field up to six works cars at each round.
Key Points of the Two-Team Structure
Both teams will continue to operate from the same base in Jyväskylä, Finland. The two cars will be developed separately while maintaining equal performance, with active use of driver feedback, allowing the teams to compete as genuine rivals for victories. This approach is intended to intensify competition and give fans new storylines to follow.
TOYOTA RACING (GR Celica Rally1)
One of the most iconic names in Toyota’s rally history, the Celica, returns to the WRC.
Elfyn Evans / Scott Martin
2026 Drivers’ and Co-drivers’ Champions. The pair enter their eighth consecutive full season with the team. After five previous runner-up finishes, they finally claimed the world title.
“Winning the title was truly special. I’m looking forward to the challenge of the new car together with the team.”
Oliver Solberg / Elliott Edmondson
In their first full season with the team in 2026, they finished second in the championship with three wins and the highest number of stage victories of any driver. Solberg had previously won the WRC2 title in a GR Yaris Rally2 in 2025.
“My first full season was a fantastic experience. I’m really looking forward to being involved in the development of the new car.”
Sami Pajari / Marko Salminen
In their second full season in the top category, they finished third with three wins and nine podium finishes from 13 events.
“Three wins and nine podiums exceeded our expectations. I’m looking forward to the challenge of the new car.”
GAZOO Racing TOYOTA (GR Yaris Rally1)
The team will continue to build on the strong success already achieved by the GR Yaris under the current regulations.
Ott Tänak / Martin Järveoja
Returning to the team seven years after winning the 2019 world title with TGR-WRT. The Estonian pair scored 10 victories in the Yaris WRC across 2018 and 2019.
“It is an honour to return to this team. I’m looking forward to being back on the stages and fighting for good results together.”
Takamoto Katsuta / Aaron Johnston
2026 was a breakthrough year, with a maiden WRC victory in Kenya followed by another win in Croatia. Katsuta also became the first Japanese driver to lead the championship standings.
“It was a special year in which I achieved my long-held goal of a first WRC win. I will keep working towards the bigger goal of fighting for the world title. I’m also very happy that Ott and Kalle are coming back.”
Kalle Rovanperä / Jonne Halttunen
Returning after a one-year break. The pair won consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023, with Rovanperä becoming the youngest-ever World Rally Champion. They will contest selected events in 2027, creating flexibility to include other drivers such as Sébastien Ogier or emerging talents.
“I’m really happy to have the opportunity to return to rallying with GR and Jonne. The new car is very different, so it’s an exciting new challenge for me.”
Preparation for the New Regulations and the Challenge Programme
Both cars are being developed in parallel under the new FIA WRC technical regulations and will share the same power and performance. Homologation is scheduled for completion by the end of December 2026, with full details and liveries to be revealed before the start of the 2027 season. On the day of the announcement, the team completed the final day of a six-day rally simulation test in Finland. A groundbreaking ceremony was also held for the new technical centre under construction in Maijala.
The GR WRC Challenge Programme for young drivers will continue and expand.
The programme that supported Takamoto Katsuta on his path to WRC victory continues to nurture Japanese talent, including Yuki Yamamoto (consistent progress in Rally2 and a first podium at Rally Japan), Takumi Matsushita, Rio Ogata (Finnish Championship SM2 champion), Kanta Yanagikuta and Daiya Minowa. In 2027 they will gain increased opportunities in WRC2 and WRC3. Global programme driver Jasper Vaher will also continue to receive support.
