Lancia Corse HF

WRC 2026 Rally Chile Bio Bío – WRC2 Preview

Škoda crews target top positions as Lancia Corse HF make their first appearance as Teams’ World Champions

The FIA World Rally Championship reaches a decisive phase at Rally Chile Bio Bío, the twelfth of 14 rounds, held from 10-13 September 2026 around the city of Concepción in Chile’s Biobío region. With only three events remaining in the season, the WRC2 category remains wide open.

Rally Chile Bio Bío made its WRC debut in 2019 and this year marks its fifth appearance. The event is based in Concepción on the Pacific coast and features technical gravel stages that often run through privately owned forests. Visibility is frequently limited by fog and tree cover, while rain and humidity can rapidly change grip levels. This year’s route has been significantly revised, with approximately 51% of the competitive distance modified compared with previous editions. New sections include Carampangue, while the opening leg features stages such as Turquía, Nuevo Rere and Hualqui. The rally comprises 16 special stages covering 311.18 competitive kilometres. After a ceremonial start in the heart of Concepción on Thursday evening, crews face 101.3 km on Friday, 139.2 km on Saturday and 71.2 km on Sunday, with the final stage serving as the Power Stage.

Championship situation

Estonians Robert Virves and co-driver Jakko Viilo (Toksport WRT, Škoda Fabia RS Rally2) lead the WRC2 Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ standings with 100 points from five events. With four victories already secured, they enter Chile in a strong position. Points from only six of a maximum of seven rallies count towards the final classification, and with three rounds still to run the mathematics become increasingly important.

Runners-up Roope Korhonen/Anssi Viinikka (79 points) and third-placed Teemu Suninen/Janni Hussi (76 points) are not competing in Chile. This leaves Nikolay Gryazin/Konstantin Aleksandrov (66 points) and Léo Rossel/Guillaume Mercoiret (64 points) as the main threats to the Estonian Škoda pairing.

Lancia Corse HF arrive in Chile as newly crowned WRC2 Teams’ World Champions after securing the title at Rally del Paraguay. Gryazin sits fourth in the drivers’ standings and remains mathematically in contention for the individual title.

Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 crews

For Toksport WRT’s Robert Virves and Jakko Viilo, Rally Chile Bio Bío is new territory.

“From the onboard videos I have watched, the gravel stages look nice and fast. They should suit our Škoda Fabia RS Rally2. I see no reason why we should not collect more championship points,” says Virves.

Australians Taylor Gill and co-driver Daniel Brkic competed for Toksport WRT for the first time at Rally del Paraguay two weeks ago, finishing fourth in WRC2 on their Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 debut.

“I never expected this, because the event was new to us. We don’t know Rally Chile Bio Bío either. However, we have a great car and a professional team behind us. This gives me confidence to achieve another top result and make great progress in my career,” Gill looks ahead.

Paraguayan Fabrizio ‘Fau’ Zaldívar and Italian co-driver Marcelo Der Ohannesian (MZR Paraguay, Škoda Fabia RS Rally2) finished ninth in WRC2 at their home event.

“I want to do better in Chile,” says the 25-year-old, who finished fifth in the Chilean round last year and sixth in 2024. “I like the stages and I am confident that we can achieve a good result.”

Two further Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 cars have been entered by local driver Jorge Martínez with Argentinian navigator Rubén García, and by Miguel Granados with co-driver Marc Martí. The Mexican-Spanish pair are competing as the reigning champions of the WRC Masters Cup.

Lancia Corse HF

Fresh from securing the WRC2 Teams’ World Championship, Lancia Corse HF return to action with Nikolay Gryazin and Yohan Rossel. The Chilean event will be the team’s first rally as World Champions.

Team Principal Didier Clément said:

“After winning the World Team Championship title about ten days ago in Paraguay and demonstrating the potential of our Lancia Ypsilon Rally2 HF Integrale, our clear goal will be to shine with our two crews in a rally where they have often performed well in the past.”

With the Teams’ title already secured, the focus shifts to the individual standings. Gryazin and Rossel will approach the third-last round of the season determined to continue pushing and close the gap to the championship lead.

Event character and key challenges

Rally Chile Bio Bío features fast, flowing and sometimes incredibly narrow forest roads. Absolute precision and complete confidence in the pace notes are essential, with blind corners and changing rhythms leaving little margin for error. One of the defining characteristics of the event is its changeable weather. Rain, fog and humidity can rapidly alter both grip and visibility, transforming the character of the stages. The compact, smooth gravel can become considerably more challenging when wet, while dense tree cover can make the road difficult to read even for experienced crews.

Virves and Viilo will look to extend their championship lead on stages that appear well suited to the Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, while Lancia Corse HF aim to capitalise on their recent form and past performances in Chile. With the route substantially revised and weather likely to play a significant role, every stage and every point will be increasingly important as the season enters its final stretch.
