ロバート・ヴィルヴェスがシュコダでWRC2タイトルを獲得

シュコダのラリーカーで世界タイトルを獲得したドライバーの仲間入りに、新たな名前が加わりました。エストニア人ドライバーのロバート・ヴィルヴェス選手が、WRC2とWRC2チャレンジャーの両タイトルを手にしました。シュコダモータースポーツが125周年を迎える特別な年に、生涯最高の勝利を収めたことになります。

幼少期からの夢と、厳しい道のり

ヴィルヴェス選手は3歳の時に初めてラリーカーのハンドルを握り、物心がついた頃から「プロのラリードライバーになる」という目標だけを追い続けてきました。

2022年には地元ラリー・エストニアでジュニアWRC3カテゴリーのスペシャルステージを17本勝ち、新記録を樹立。続くギリシャ・ラリーでの優勝を経て、同カテゴリーの世界チャンピオンに輝いています。

順調なスタートを切った一方で、その後はスポンサー探しに苦戦し、良い結果を出し続ける必要に迫られました。「ある時点では、ラリーを完全にやめてしまおうかと思うところまで来ていた」と本人が振り返るほど、道のりは平坦ではありませんでした。

転機が訪れたのは2025年初頭。実績のあるシュコダ・ファビアRS Rally2を投入するToksport WRTとタッグを組むことになりました。シュコダでの経験自体は以前にもあり、2022年にエストニア・サーレマー島の地元イベントで2位を獲得したのが初の「翼の矢」との出会いでした。2025年シーズンは新しいクルマに慣れ、経験とポイントを積み重ね、7月の地元ラリー・エストニアでWRC2カテゴリー初優勝を果たし、年間5位でシーズンを終えています。

2026年シーズン：砂利道を得意とするエストニア人の戦い方

2026年シーズン、ヴィルヴェス選手は7戦を選択してポイント争いに臨みました。開幕戦ケニア（3月）は、激しい雨と深い泥でさらに過酷なコンディションに。当初は参戦を望んでいなかったという本人も「本当のサファリを経験した」と語る中、トラブルを回避して見事な優勝を飾りました。

グラベルを最も得意とする純粋なエストニア人らしい選択で、ギリシャ、フィンランド、そして地元のコースにもシュコダで乗り込みました。「単純にグラベルが一番好き」と本人が語る通り、この3戦をすべて制しています。

連勝は8月のパラグアイで途切れました。オープニングステージでクラッシュし、再スタートしたものの失ったタイムを取り戻せず、ポイント圏外に終わります。「難しい時期だった。でも一番大切なのは、モチベーションを保って戦い続けることだった。不思議なことに、パラグアイは今シーズン一番好きなラリーになった。ファンの皆さんが本当に温かく迎えてくれたことが伝わってきたから」と振り返っています。

続くチリでは2位で巻き返し。残り2戦はサルディニアとサウジアラビアでした。理論上はテーム・スニネン選手だけがタイトルを脅かす存在でしたが、最終戦サウジアラビアの中止によりスニネン選手の数学的な可能性も消え、ヴィルヴェス選手はサルディニアに「すでにチャンピオンとして」臨むことになりました。イタリアの島では当初パンクに苦しみましたが、その後の猛チャージで2位まで順位を上げ、スニネン選手の前でフィニッシュ。タイトルを確定させました。

WRC2のポイントシステムについて

WRCのカレンダーは通常、年間13〜14戦。各ドライバーはシーズン前にポイント対象となる7戦を選び、他のイベントにも出走可能です。通常は選択したイベントのうち上位6戦の結果が最終順位に反映され、最も低い結果はドロップされます。

2026年は最終戦サウジアラビアの中止を受け、選択したイベントのうち上位5戦の結果が最終順位に反映される特別なルールとなりました。WRC2タイトルはドライバー、コ・ドライバー、チームの3部門で争われます。

シュコダの伝統に新たな1ページを

ヴィルヴェス選手は、ヤン・コペッキー、カッレ・ロバンペラ、アンドレアス・ミッケセン、エミル・リンドホルムといった歴代の名ドライバーたちに続き、シュコダのラリーカーで世界チャンピオンとなった仲間入りを果たしました。125周年を迎える年にタイトルを獲得できたことは、特別な意味を持っています。

“Never Stop Fighting and Believe in Yourselves” — New Champion Robert Virves Claims WRC2 and WRC2 Challenger Titles with Škoda

Another name has joined the exclusive club of drivers who have won world titles in Škoda rally cars. Estonian driver Robert Virves has secured both the WRC2 and WRC2 Challenger titles. He achieved the victory of a lifetime in the very year that Škoda Motorsport celebrates its 125th anniversary.

The FIA and the official WRC channels have already congratulated Virves and co-driver Jakko Viilo as the 2026 champions, and the titles are now treated as fully confirmed.

From Childhood Dream to Professional Path

Virves first sat behind the wheel of a rally car at the age of three. For as long as he can remember, his only goal in life has been to become a professional rally driver.

In 2022 he made a strong impression by winning 17 special stages at his home event, Rally Estonia — a new record in the Junior WRC3 category. After victory in Greece he went on to claim the world championship title in that category.

Despite the promising start, the road ahead was far from easy. He spent a long time searching for sponsors and needed consistent good results. “At one point I was not far from saying goodbye to rallying for good,” the Estonian admits.

The turning point came at the beginning of 2025 when he began working with the Toksport WRT team and its proven Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 cars. He had driven a Škoda before, finishing second at a home event on the Estonian island of Saaremaa in 2022. During the 2025 season he gradually adapted to the new car, gained experience and valuable points, and scored his first WRC2 victory on home soil at Rally Estonia, finishing the year fifth overall.

The 2026 Season: An Estonian Who Prefers Gravel

This year Virves selected seven rallies and began his campaign in Kenya in March. Persistent rain and deep mud made the traditionally demanding African event even more challenging. Although he initially did not want to go, he and his Fabia RS Rally2 excelled in the extreme conditions, avoided trouble and took first place. “In the end we experienced a real Safari,” he said after the rally.

As a true Estonian he prefers gravel, so he headed to Greece, Finland and of course his home tracks. “I simply prefer gravel the most,” the newly crowned champion states. He confirmed his strength by winning all three events.

His winning streak was interrupted in Paraguay in August, where he crashed on the very first special stage. Although he rejoined the rally, he was unable to recover the lost time and finished outside the points. “Those were difficult times. The main thing was to stay motivated and keep fighting. Strangely enough, Paraguay ended up being my favourite rally of the season. The fans made it clear that we were truly and warmly welcome,” Virves recalls.

He remained in South America for the next round in Chile and bounced back with an excellent second-place finish. At that point only two rounds remained — Sardinia and Saudi Arabia. Theoretically only Teemu Suninen could still threaten his title bid. However, the cancellation of the final round in Saudi Arabia removed even Suninen’s mathematical chance, so Virves arrived in Sardinia as the confirmed champion. On the Italian island he initially struggled with punctures, but fought back with a determined charge and finished second, sealing the title.

How Points Are Scored in WRC2

The World Championship calendar typically includes 13 to 14 events per year. Before the start of the season each competitor selects seven events that will count towards the WRC2 standings (they may also enter other rallies). Under the usual rules the six best results count, with the lowest score dropped.

This year the cancellation of Rally Saudi Arabia meant that only the five best results from the selected events counted towards the final standings. Titles in WRC2 are contested in three categories: drivers, co-drivers and teams.

A New Chapter in Škoda’s History

Virves has joined the ranks of famous names such as Jan Kopecký, Kalle Rovanperä, Andreas Mikkelsen and Emil Lindholm — all of whom became world champions driving Škoda rally cars. The victory is all the sweeter because it came exactly in the year that Škoda Motorsport is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

“It’s great that we can celebrate this anniversary by winning the title,” concludes Virves, sending a clear message to young hopefuls:

“Don’t stop fighting, and believe in yourselves.”
